#10: Home – The University of Life

Introduction
The devil levels his most fiery darts at the home, because the devil knows if he can destroy the lives of the children, he can dominate the world. And God knows that. That’s why He inspired Moses to tell fathers to teach their children. God intends that the first school, the first seminary, the first university is to be the home, with the father as the prime professor and president. God has ordained that the husband is to be the head of the family.

And most of our men have abdicated their responsibility. The father is the one who is to give stability and leadership and character and strength to the family. But today’s fathers are dropouts, more interested in things like business, sports,
sex, pleasure, televisions, and computers than they are in being the fathers that God has commanded them to be. And we have so many misdirected mothers as well. Mothers are being pushed out of the home. Millions of children are left to themselves or put in day care centers, and they lack the nurture that God intended for them to have. We are reaping the bitter results.

Let’s talk about the students in the University of Life. Who are they? The students are children (Deuteronomy 6: 6-7). And when should they be enrolled? At a very early age. Now why should we start with little children? For four reasons.

  1. Correction
First childhood is the time of correction. Take a little twig and you can easily bend and shape it however you want. Try to bend the trunk of mighty oak, and you have different task on your hands. You can take a little child and begin to train up the child in the way he should he should go, as if you are directing a little stream of water. You can direct the life of that child.
  2. Communication
Second childhood is the time of communication. It is amazing how small children can learn. God has given that child a curiosity factor. He’s given that child memory factor. We have a good forgettery; they have a good memory. And God has given that child a humility factor and trust factor.
  3. Conversion
Put all these factors and you can see why childhood is the time of conversion. You need to aim for the conversion of your children. Many people who get incensed if you try to lead a little child to Jesus Christ. We ought not to think it strange that little child comes to Jesus Christ. We ought to think it absolutely unusual if child raised in a Christian home does not come to know Jesus Christ at an early age. A little child doesn’t need to be a professional at sin before he can be saved.
  4. Curriculum
The Bible says, “And these words which I commanded you today shall be in your heart, you shall teach them diligently to your children.” (Deuteronomy 6: 6-7). The curriculum is the Word of God. That is the subject of which you are the professor. Teach creatively and compellingly and without hypocrisy. Teach little by little, that is line upon line, precept upon precept, truth upon truth (Isaiah 28:13). One day your child will ask you the meaning of all these things, and you will have the joy of leading your son or daughter to Christ.

Conclusion
Statistics tell us that more than 75% of all people who are saved come to Jesus before the age of fourteen. Mathew Henry the Bible commentator was saved at the age of eleven. Jonathan Edwards at eight. Polycarp, a church father at nine, and he was burned at the stake at ninety because he refused to turn his back on the Lord Jesus Christ. Charles Spurgeon was saved at twelve, and he testified that he would have been saved at a much earlier age had somebody shown him how to trust in Christ as his personal Lord and Savior.
