Tip 3- Talk to children about their fears
Creating natural opportunities for good communication is a part of healthy family life.
Among the other benefits, they enable us to draw out from our children what is worrying them. Sometimes they will tell us exactly what is causing them anxiety and we can reassure them we have understood. Then we can work out a plan together so that they know they are not alone in their fears. So, if they are anxious about exams, we could help to plan a revision timetable. If they are worried about going on public transport, we may be able to find a friend to travel with them.
If they are under a lot of stress, go one step at a time. Do not try to deal with all the problems at once. So, if they are struggling with school/college work, focus on one subject, and help them to think of some simple steps for improving next term. Try to find out what is worrying them most. We may be surprised. Sometimes all they need is our reassurance.
Next week we will look at another tip.
