The counsel of the Lord stands forever. (Psalms 33:11)
Wise counsel has its roots in the One who is forever wise. Counsel based only on personal experience or impression will be flawed by human weakness. It’s God’s counsel, extracted from His Word and lived out in human experience, that will stand the test of time and be perfect in its wisdom. Couples seeking the wisdom of scripture together find unity as they look beyond their individual desires and submit their hearts to God’s eternal truth. Couples who search the Scriptures together find oneness as they trust God for direction in their spiritual pilgrimage.
Turning aside to consider His counsel takes the focus off my prejudices. When we seek the Lord’s counsel on child-rearing issues, career decisions, and money management, we come away with a renewed sense of unity. Without fail, God and His Word have remained faithful to provide us with direction and guidance for every issue. Even when we begin our search with a difference of opinion, the simple practice of humbling ourselves before God’s Word brought about an openness and humility of heart. The search for His wisdom softens our heart towards one another.
Let us make a commitment to seek the Lord’s counsel through our own devotional time each day. Through this we experience a deepened sense of closeness with one another and with the Lord when we’ve followed the same plan for our devotional readings. We reflect privately on the passage and then during the course of the day share our insights with each other. These discussions serve as an important opportunity for each of us to receive counsel and hear our spouse’s insights from Scripture. We can marvel at the relevance of God’s Word for each personal and family issue.
Q. For what issue do you need to ask the Lord’s counsel? How will you involve your spouse in this search for wisdom?
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank You that Your Word gives us light for our path. Amen.
