O Lord… you know me. (Psalm 139:1)

The Psalmist in this passage is expressing the sheer wonder that God knows him and still loves him. He marvels at how intricately God knows and understands his heart, mind, thoughts, and actions.

Ephesians tells us that we are God’s workmanship, or handiwork, and that He has studied and admired His creation. As our Creator, God knows our strengths, weaknesses, moods, needs, preferences, and desires. He looks at what He’s made, and He likes what He sees.

Ephesians 2:10 tells us how God sees His creation. Ephesians says that we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works. This word workmanship actually comes from the Greek word meaning “poetry”. So in essence, we are God’s poetry. He made each of us unique, exactly as He wanted us to be.

Your spouse is God’s poetry, a reflection of His creativity and handiwork. We would encourage you to spend some time in prayer and ask God to give you His eyes and show you what He sees when He looks at your spouse. Ask God to show you the beautiful intricacies of His design. Ask Him to capture your heart with the beauty of His poetry: your spouse.

This may sound a little weird because we don’t often think of our spouse as beautiful poetry, especially when we’ve been married for a while and the flaws and imperfections seem to overwhelm any view of God’s masterpiece. But let us ask God to give us a renewed view of the beauty in our spouse. He knows our spouse intimately and loves His work. Let us ask Him to give us the same view.

PRAYER: Father, thank You for knowing me and my spouse. Give me Your perspective as I admire the beauty of my spouse. In Jesus’ name, amen.
