We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon You. (2 Chronicles 20:12)

“I think we should save more money for our children’s education”.
“I think we should pay off our debts”.
“I don’t like the church we are attending”.
“I love our church”.
“I can’t go on like this!”
“Things aren’t nearly that bad!”

Marital oneness is tested as marriage decisions abound. Sadly, sometimes marital intimacy is lost during these tests.

Married life is a series of daily, fork-in-the-road decisions that bring the potential for harmony or for discord. A good place to begin making these decisions is to acknowledge our need for divine intervention and entreat the Lord together.

We struggle for years with typical marriage discord. But just as troubling as the discord, was the pain we felt over not being able to experience oneness in all areas of our marriage. We know this oneness is a critical part of God’s plan for marriage, but it seems elusive (not easy to catch). We mistakenly think that if we could only resolve these conflicts, then we’d find oneness. But God has another plan in mind.

Let’s notice the oneness among the people in this Scripture passage. “We know not what to do” means “We’re united in not having the answers”. That’s the state of oneness. “But our eyes are upon You” means ” We’re united in looking to God for wisdom and direction”. Then, oneness can proceed. Together we trust a good God to grant a “peace that passes all understanding”.

Where or to whom do you turn first when you have marital discord?

PRAYER: Father, unite our hearts in entreaty for Your wisdom and direction. We know not what to do! In Jesus’s name, amen!
