#117: The Two Become One

A man shall leave his father and mother… and they shall become one flesh. (Genesis 2:24)

Our marriage looks a lot different now than it did when we first started out. Time erodes idealism and exposes the futility of the world’s shallowness. It didn’t take us long to see what our sin nature looks like – not only in each other but in ourselves as well.

We both have learnt that when we aren’t getting along, it’s because we aren’t living out a portion of God’s Word. We aren’t walking in the light that brings fellowship with one another. When we have these breaks in fellowship or have conflict, we spend time alone and ask God what Bible verses He would like us to be living out.

Many times in the past we’ve discovered that conflicts have occurred in our marriage because we weren’t free to live out Genesis 2:24 – “therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh”. We have discovered that it was one thing to physically leave our father and mother, but quite another to emotionally leave them and cleave to one another. We left our geographical location when we got married, but it has taken decades to emotionally leave our parents. It has taken years to identify the hurts from our childhood and heal them so that we can be free to become united with one another.

As we have done this, we have seen the ugliness of sin and the beauty of Christ in our lives. Though we have far to go, God has given us a love for each other by which we can hope all things, believe all things, and endure all things.
