#127: Trusting Unconditionally

My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped. (Psalm 28:7)

We’ve come to realise that we’ve wanted to trust our spouse with only the areas in which they’ve proven trustworthy. But trust is like love – it can’t be conditional. Trusting our spouse out of our feelings is wrong. We have to believe the best of them. We don’t believe that our spouse ever consciously tries to hurt us, so when we withhold our trust, we’ve already judged their motives.

The times when we’ve been challenged to trust our spouse in a deeper way, or to trust them after a time of pain, have been difficult. Everything in us wants to protect our heart and run from discomfort. Our only source of help has been the trustworthiness of our heavenly Father.

God has assured us that we must trust Him first. We must trust the Holy Spirit to get our spouse’s attention, work on their heart, or work on ours. The results will be amazing. When we have placed our trust in God’s ability and His timing, we’ve been helped every time. Have things always gone our way or happened as we expected? No, but the Lord has been faithful to provide for our needs.

As we take practical steps to trust our spouse, we have to remember the positive (not just the painful) parts of our marriage. We have to tell ourselves the whole truth about our spouse and then choose to believe the best. Has my spouse hurt me? Yes, but they’ve also been faithful and trustworthy. As we remind ourselves about the positive times as well as the painful, we are free to believe the best about our spouse.

Trust doesn’t always come easily, but trust can be gained by choosing to believe in our spouse and think the best.

ACTION ASSIGNMENT
After placing our trust in the Lord, how will we choose to believe the best about our spouse?

PRAYER: Father, only as I keep my eyes on You and trust You can I totally trust my spouse. In Jesus’s name, amen.
