#128: When I’m Sixty-Four

Let our people also learn to maintain good works. (Titus 3:14)

There is an old Beatles tune “When I’m Sixty Four”. One of the lines in the song asks “will you still need me, when I’m sixty-four?”

That’s something most married couples think about, isn’t it? Will my spouse still want to be with me when my wrinkles are set in concrete and my hair is gray? Will my spouse still love me then and want to be around? Scary question, isn’t it?

In a day and age when few things seem permanent, when people change partners like they change shirts, we all wonder if love will last. Yet true intimacy is built on the commitment to love our spouse forever.

We are committed to our spouse forever, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t struggled. We have had our disagreements and endured plenty of unloving moments. When we haven’t felt so loving toward our spouse. We’ve called upon our devotion to God. We work out things with our spouse out because of the commitment we’ve made to them on our wedding day. When our heart and feelings have wavered, our devotion to God has restored our path.

God has called us to love our spouse. He’s called us to maintain the “good work” of our marriage. There are times when we feel as if we’ve been married only just a few days ago, and there are times when we feel every one of the years we’ve been together. But there’s no one else on the earth who has the opportunity like us.

We plan to be married to our spouse when we are sixty-four and even more, and our spouse feels the same about us. What a blessing of devotion!
